Conscious Fashion,
Interview
Palkan Parikh - Founder LOLITA Eco Resort wear talks about her brand, sustainable fashion and on being inspired by nature.
Being a lifestyle photographer, a wellness and sustainability blogger and conscious creator I am always scouting brands who deliver a difference ! While I do so, I come across not just products but the revolutionary mindsets of those entrepreneurs and their passion to make an impact.
Such is the story of Palkan Parikh - Founder of LOLITA - An Eco Resort Wear. Come get to know her and the brand a little better in this interview.
Kimaya : Thank you for agreeing to do this interview. My name is Kimaya and I write a humble blog called ‘The Meliorist’. It mostly covers sustainability and wellness along with other social movements close to my heart.
I loved your brand! Love the designs! What caught my attention was your brand values! When I read the description I think of a fierce yet gentle, confident yet kind, maybe ambitious woman. Is that what the name suggests?
What is in the name LOLITA?
Palkan : LOLITA is inspired by the true female form. Lolita is confident and does not shy away from embracing her female form and celebrating her body and self. She is liberated and breaks cultural norms in all aspects, especially when it comes to fashion.
Kimaya : What inspired you to start this brand? Was it your love for ocean and diving? Was sustainability always the fundamental pillar of this business idea?
Palkan : I was on a scuba diving live aboard in Maldives two years ago, where I went with a bunch of strangers, all from the city of Bombay, belonging to different age groups and backgrounds, all connected and brought together by their love for the ocean and diving.
Two things happened on that boat that sparked the idea to start my own swimwear line. The first reason - Three girls on that boat, including me, showed up on a boat in Maldives with the same exact swimsuits, in the same size, from the same brand. I was in my early 20’s and the other two girls were in their mid thirties. I was the only one on that boat who did not reside in Mumbai, but instead in Vadodara, GJ. I was surprised to know that people in a metropolitan city like Bombay, have extremely limited swimwear options. The swimwear options that they do have are from fast fashion houses, they produce in a very high quantity and are exploiting workers and labourers doing so. The swimwear we buy from these brands do not have the best fabric quality and they will only last the user for so many years, before the quality and fabric starts to wear, rip and fade off.
The second reason - On the boat with us, we had another member that was born a man, but identified as a female. She had undergone a few basic surgeries to remove her male reproductive parts. She was a Gujarati, living in Bombay and was in her mid forties. To my surprise, she was the only one on the boat who had a new pair of bikini for every single dive. We had a total of 18 dives throughout the trip. I was awestruck to see her confidence and how liberated she must feel. This is when I learnt that the culture and mindset in India is slowly changing, especially in the bigger metropolitan parts of the country.
“I finally decided to become a scuba diving instructor and started my journey in the summer of 2021, on a live-aboard in Maldives. Over there, I met 21 strangers and we were going to be living on a boat together for 7 days, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Somewhere along bumping into two other girls who got the same exact pair of bikinis as me, who were also much older than me and spending time with a beautiful human being who was born a man, but all she wanted was to be a girl. I was blown away just looking at her rocking a new pair of bikini every day with such grace and confidence. That’s when I got inspired and Lolita was born in the middle of the Indian Ocean, far far away from any kind of land.”
Kimaya : Tell us the something people don’t know about sustainable fashion?
Palkan : Sustainable fashion is the future of fashion and every brand eventually will explore sustainable fabrics to keep up with the societal requirements and obligations. Tons of fabrics and clothes are wasted every year. An environmental crisis is being caused due to the amount of textile waste that happens annually around the globe and it's only increasing day by day. In times like this, its important to stand out and give back to the environment in any capacity.
Kimaya : What are your challenges as a sustainable business?
Palkan : As Lolita, as a brand does not compromise on its fabric quality, and as we use 100% sustainable fabrics from one of the leading fabric suppliers in the world, the fabric is more expensive than normal swimwear fabrics. Here at Lolita, we also do not believe in fast fashion or producing in higher quantities, as it is not sustainable or good for our environment. We release exclusive collections, in smaller quantities. Amounting to all this, our products are priced fairly and can be justified. In comparison to our competitors, we provide the most premium swimwear fabric and quality in timeless designs and silhouettes, yet keeping our prices fairly lower than other home grown swimwear businesses.
Kimaya : What are your ideas on ‘degendering’ fashion?
Palkan : “GENDER NEUTRALITY IS NOT THE DEATH OF FASHION, IT IS THE RENAISSANCE OF FASHION.”
While every aspect of the fashion system — from mainstream media and fashion weeks to e-commerce and retail spaces — is beholden to the segregated categories of "menswear" and "womenswear", clothing has no inherent gender. Clothing is only gendered insofar as we've assigned our own binary gender perceptions to specific styles of clothing. In other words, individual garments have no intrinsic gender to them, but societal conditioning creates the perception that certain clothing is gendered. And, it's the movement to degender fashion that aims to undo this arbitrary binary in the fashion industry.
Like previously mentioned, Lolita was inspired by two events that happened on my trip to the Maldives and one of them was inspired by a human who was born a man, looks like a man, but identifies as a female. Watching her wear a new pair of bikini everyday and with such grace and confidence inspired me so much.
Kimaya : Swimwear is mostly considered to be a female indulgence. Would you be open to using a male model for your swimwear?
Palkan : Yes, we would definitely want to be more inclusive as a brand within our sizing options and the genders and age groups we serve and cater too. Our first priority is to first break through in the industry with keeping our focus on women’s wear right now but we will definitely expand our gender range in the upcoming future.
Kimaya : Do you still shop fast fashion? If so, which brands and why?
Palkan : I try to avoid shopping fast fashion as much as I could but the fact of the matter is that the major brands in the industry right now only do fast fashion and not slow or sustainable. Fast fashion is also more affordable than slow fashion is because producing in bulk is always more cost effective than producing in smaller quantities.
Kimaya : What are your favourite sustainable fashion brands apart from yours?
Palkan : Currently, In the Indian market, there are not many brands that do sustainable swimwear or resort wear that I know of.
I only wear Lolita swim pieces because they flatter my body perfectly and I haven’t found anything other swimwear brand in India that looks on my body or is made with a premium quality fabric
Kimaya : Talk about the importance of women empowerment in sustainability. Maybe tell us how this connects to your brand mission of supporting women around the globe.
Palkan : By instilling this strength in our beachwear models, distinguishing you from the crowd, making you unique, different, highlighting that unique power that resides in us! Offering a range of products that empowers you.
Each of these swimsuits features an unique cut that by itself individualizes us anywhere. Using any of these pieces of beachwear, on any occasion, we will distinguish ourselves, stand out. Since, as all the pieces have an unique design, they are timeless and flattering to any body they are worn on.
Kimaya : Message to the readers.
Palkan: We created Lolita as our passion for swimwear comes from our love for the ocean, and we noticed a lack of sustainable swimwear options in India that were stylish, affordable, and inclusive in size.
With that in mind we wanted to create timeless, sustainable and fashionable swimwear that women feel empowered in.
The thing we love the most about Lolita is the magic it brings. We have seen women who continuously say "I wouldn't normally go for this, but it looks amazing and I feel great in it!", so that keeps us motivated to push further and keep bringing beautiful styles to you all.
We hope you enjoy your Lolita pieces as much as we do and feel amazing in them!
With Lolita, I hope I can create confidence and power within our female audience. Our effort to do this is by making sure every Lolita piece is timeless and crafted perfectly to flatter and compliment the female form.
Lolita is designed for the stylish girl, who is confident, minimalistic and carefree. Whether she is lying on the beach somewhere in the tropics, soaking up the sun, sitting poolside with her friends, or swimming in the ocean, she is happy and glowing because she is comfortable and confident in her own skin.
Lolita has a tedious design and development process, where every clothing piece is sampled and fitted several times, before it is approved. Nothing is added or released into the collection, unless we feel it is an absolute perfection and something we know our Lolita’s customers will not find any where else, while ultimately giving them the confidence to wear it.
The line features bold prints and colour-ways, chosen specifically to flatter every skin tone. Our fabrics are buttery soft and of the best quality, made for countless never ending summers. Adjustable ties and straps are featured in every suit, making them easy and comfortable to wear according to your body type, with no digging or cutting in. Lolita’s tries to incorporate minimal hardware into the effortlessly crafted products and complimentary cuts, leaving you feeling sexy, confident, happy and ready to hit the beach or go on your next vacation.
Xoxo,
Lolita
It's that time of the year, when all the brands start promoting 'Love' like never in the remaining 10 months of the year! Yes, the time your see all the visual merchandisers go beserk with the colour red - the colour of love! All of them, only trying to convince you to spend the modern day of love, in the most perfect way! Valentine's day is way more than just a colour, or a getaway! It is a day to make your loved ones feel more special than they do on other days. To show them that they are valued and appreciated than most beings you know on the planet!
Giving cards, buying flowers and chocolates or taking them on fancy dinners definetely are the most sought after ways but hey, let's be a bit mindful about these things too. Let's not forget the love we received from our planet to start a life. Let us do some things mindfully and reconsider our choices, in order to not cause any harm to our environment in the bargain. Millions of paper cards, flowers wrapped in plastic, all will be a part of trash the next day. Why not become a bit conscious and spend the day purposefully!
I will not tell you how you should spend your day but what I'd rather do, is provide you some environment-friendly options and ideas to do the same.

I have never celebrated a Valentine's day with a partner ( like a boyfriend ) . I spend my Valentine's with my mother and the rest of my family. So, the below mentioned ideas are for anyone and everyone and even for yourself, not just for couples ( as usually pictured )
Adopt a Tree
The world needs more of love but at this hour it definetely needs more trees. There are many NGOs offering this option now. WWF India started this campaign in 2005 with the idea of growing and nurturing the native species of trees. This was extended not only to individuals but also to organizations, so more people could participate, more like a CSR activity. Just like sponsoring a child, you will get updates and photos of the tree you adopted. If that is not sweet, I do not know what is? If this idea fascinates you, here is the link https://support.wwfindia.org/aat/ . Go ahead, adopt a tree with your loved one, it's a good way to make your mother Earth feel loved and appreciated too. :)

Buy ethical chocolate
'Ethical chocolate? So fancy! Where do I go looking for it now? Must be expensive!' This is what we say when someone talks about ethical chocolate brands . But there are some individuals who beleived otherwise and created some exotic ethical chocolate brands. Mason and co. is one such, who creates single origin chocolate and cacao products. Earth Loaf is another, who mindfully crafts their artisanal chocolate bars, using all organic ingredients. You can buy one for less then Rs.350 . Yes, I know it might sound expensive for a bar, but think of it from the sustainability point of view. These are artisanal chocolates, made with locally sourced ingredients; some directly from the farmers; organic, made in small batches. Appreciate the work that goes behind making this product.
Well, another great option could also be making your own chocolate. Adds a personal touch! You can customise the shapes and sizes as per your like.

Visit an animal shelter, an orphanage or an old-age home.
To make the underprivileged feel loved, is a noble act. I need not say more. Remember Valentine's day is all about celebrating love, with everyone.

I hope you find these ideas helpful. Remember, no effort goes to waste. Write a poem, sing a song, paint a picture or cook a meal. Do something that makes your people feel special!
I hope you choose to love your planet as much as your loved ones. Nevertheless, I wish you all have a great day with your special people. After all, they are the ones who add meaning to our lives. :)

It seems like under the umbrella of “natural skincare” , words like green, vegan, non-toxic, clean are being tossed around, now - a - days, but what do these actually mean?
How do we differentiate between these terms?
There are green products which are not organic. There are organic products which are have toxic elements, while some vegan products not green. Goodness gracious! Choosing the right skincare can be difficult!
To solve this dilemma, I have listed some common certification terms below with their explanations, which will help you differentiate between these terms and help you to choose efficiently.
Organic
This one is a crowd pleaser! Almost every brand in skincare is jumping the ‘organic’ bandwagon. This simply means the ingredients in the product are cultivated with no use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or artificial enhancers.
Green
Green refers to the impact on environment. It speaks for optimum utilisation of available resources, minimal wastage of natural resources, tackling waste issues, supporting sustainability and fair trade, and eradicating human or animal exploitation.
Ayurvedic
This is based on the age-old medicinal and healing formulas in the Ayurvedas, which is, now, a form of alternative medicine, from India. The ingredients are nature-derived and the formulation is archaic. Many brands are now experimenting a blend a of Ayurvedic recipes and modern science to create the best product suitable for today’s needs.
Vegan & Cruelty Free
As the name suggests, no animals are harmed in the entire process. While ‘Cruelty Free” refers to the products not being tested on animals, during R&D, 'Vegan' means that no animal derived products are used to create the product.
Non-toxic or Clean
Many commercial products have chemicals which, with prolonged usage, are extremely harmful to humans. Thanks to the research & development and the following awareness, we are now informed about these chemicals which have a detrimental effect on human body. When you see the product being tagged as “Non-toxic” or “Clean”, it simply means that the product is free from carcinogens, neurotoxins, skin irritants, hormone disruptors and so on.
Conscious
A conscious brand is the one that includes most of the above mentioned and puts their best foot forward. This is the one to root for!
These are some of the most important and known tags. Most of them are now certified by various governmental bodies. What is commendable is that many conscious brands are now working hard and getting their formulas and products certified, which makes it easier for us to decide and choose the right product which is good for us and the environment!
That is it, for now! I am going to talk about how to select the right skincare by asking the right questions in the next post.
Stay tuned. :)

In
Conscious Skincare,
Interview
Prasanthy Gurugubelli - Founder of the conscious skincare brand 'Daughter Earth®' on Ayurveda and Conscious Skincare.
Here's what Prasanthy Gurugubelli - Founder at Daughter Earth® had to say about the importance of Ayurveda in skincare and talks in depth about the conscious skincare brand.
What led to the conception of the thought of wanting to start an Ayurvedic skincare brand?
Our journey at Daughter Earth® started around 2.5 years ago when I decided to venture into wellness and Ayurveda, specially skincare and supplements. The idea was never just skincare, it just worked out faster with skincare. We wanted to blend the modern green technology with ancient Ayurveda and bring about formulas that are clinically tested and dermatologically proven.
Was Ayurveda a part of your life before Daughter Earth® happened? If yes, tell us about it.
Yes, Ayurveda has always been a part of my life. I am from the South of India. In Andhra Pradesh, in all our families, since childhood it is a part of our lifestyle. We used cleansers made at home, my mother never used a cream in her life and my grandmother would prepare a daily morning and evening skin care ritual. I grew up like that! I am sure lot of other families grew up like that. In every Indian household, Ayurveda, somehow, is interwoven with what we do in our day to day life.
In the past couple of years, when I started exploring myself spiritually, I started investing in myself more, I elevated my lifestyle with a more holistic approach and Ayurveda definitely made it easier for me.
"In India, everything is Ayurveda, we don’t even realise it! We use ginger, we use turmeric, unknowingly, we are using the age-old concepts of Ayurveda. And that’s the beauty of it, in an Indian household it has become a part of our lifestyle rather than calling it science."
In a place like India, where Ayurveda culturally belongs but was mute for all these years, you think it has, now, resurfaced as a possible trend or the need of time?
In a place like India, where Ayurveda culturally belongs but was mute for all these years, you think it has, now, resurfaced as a possible trend or the need of time?
People always wanted something natural, it is not because of a trend. Our elders always preferred natural remedies, so there was always an incline towards naturals products.
Today, our consumers are more aware, thanks to the wide reach on social media and the awareness on sustainable and natural products! They are asking questions, which is great! So, brands like Daughter Earth®, which are backed by science, help the consumers understand the importance of active botanicals and sustainability. I would say, natural skincare is definitely here to stay, not just as a trend.
Daughter Earth products are Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy ) certified. What according to you, is the importance of being approved by a governmental body of India?
Certified by the Ministry of AYUSH, gives us a lot of credibility! If the formula is approved by AYUSH, then that means it has gone through multiple rounds of really strict auditing of the entire formula. It is different from cosmetic formulation. There are many boutique skincare brands in India, who do not even have any registration, not questioning their great intentions though, it is a fact. At Daughter Earth®, the licensing would take us months for one formula. The bureaucracy is not delaying it but every ingredient is compared and verified. That is why it takes a while to get a license. With newly introduced tests, like heavy metal testing, etc in AYUSH, the formulation has become tighter. The procedure is elongated but now when it is AYUSH certified, you know what you are getting! We disclose the actives that we add too. So, people also would know how much actives they get, obviously, the base is also equally important. In this way, Ministry of AYUSH is promoting transparency in the labels with consumers.
We go a step ahead and get it dermatologically tested as well. It is an expensive one, but we do it anyway, especially for our leave on products! Just to be sure, they suit all types of skin.
What is the importance of honest pricing, when it comes to a brand that promotes sustainability? Would that help consumers choose more of clean/sustainable options over the toxic ones?
There are couple of things. The pricing also depends on the amount of actives sourced. The herbs are expensive. We also need to account for seasonality, not all herbs are available throughout the year, we take what the nature gives us. We need to, also, make sure they are sustainably sourced. If the sourcing is fair trade , they are accounted for. The entire formulation cost goes up. Overheads are also expensive. The retail cost also adds up.
From day one, we wanted Daughter earth to be a conscious brand .
"We are not perfect, we agree but everyday, even if we take one step towards being a bit more sustainable than yesterday, we do it! "
That’s why we decided we would not open a retail store, at least not for the first couple of years. We are a digital native brand. The entire experience is online driven. We are not passing costs to our customers. So, the cost of the formula is primarily ingredient driven.
"We are not perfect, we agree but everyday, even if we take one step towards being a bit more sustainable than yesterday, we do it! "
The true cost of a product is derived by equal consideration of the manufacturing material and the way the product is manufactured, without harming the planet or the people. I think, if we keep this perspective, we will understand the value of the product, than merely looking at the cost.
I recommend you to watch this documentary called the ‘The True Cost’, for a change of perspective.
Do you think if all companies had an approach of being mission driven, it would change our current scenario of consumerism? Can effective law enforcement help bring that change?
(the approach of being mission driven) It has to come from within! No amount of moral policing will help us! The government can, however, support businesses.
It has to be consumer driven, than government driven. The moment people start becoming more aware and change their demands, is what could change the scenario of consumerism.
It helps when it becomes a trend. :)
"Coming with a history of sensitive skin, if something suited me I would share it with people with similar allergies. In the same way, every product has an amazing story, some are mine, some of my loved ones and some of our loyal customers. Someone who had hormonal acne wrote to us, saying the Rejuvenating Serum really suited her but it wasn't enough. On some days, she needed something more. Research and development on the same led to the making of the Wild Walnut oil. So, at Daughter Earth®, every product, after the first 4 products, is customer-driven, including the upcoming set of products as well."

One Tree Planted, World Wildlife Fund and Plan India. Tell us more about your association with these NGOs and why are they special to you?
A portion of what we earn is invested in two causes we care deeply for: making the planet greener by planting more trees and making the world a better place by educating our girl children. Frankly, this is what makes us wake up every day and strive harder to make products that are good for the skin and good for the planet. Some of the organisations we work with are: One Tree Planted, Project Greenhands, Plan India for girl child education, World Wildlife Foundation on their Save the Tigers project, PETA India and Vipassana meditation centers.
Your message.
Your message.
Start small. Take Mother Teresa’s words, “We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something.” Even if you are starting small, think of it from a wellness point of view, elevating your lifestyle point of view. Every moment, think of investing in yourself. Be calm, walk for five minutes at least and meditate. Go easy on yourself.
"As long we are moving forward, as long as today is better than yesterday, in terms of effort, you’ve made it!"
"As long we are moving forward, as long as today is better than yesterday, in terms of effort, you’ve made it!"
It is the #plasticfree month of the year! And I am utilising this opportunity to discuss plastic pollution in every form.
Thinking of plastic pollution, everyone talks about single-use plastics and how plastic has silently replaced a lot of goodness in our lives. We can all try to avoid or reuse visible plastic but what about the one not visible to naked eyes? Micro-plastics and plastic fibres!
Photodegraded plastic reduced to micro-plastics, plastic fibres from synthetic clothing and micro-plastic beads from toiletries / cosmetic products are just some examples of micro-plastics. These micro plastics are settled, in unimaginable quantities, on our ocean beds, furthering to contamination of seashores, across the world. What follows is plastic in your sea-food! It has been concluded by the scientists, that by 2050 the oceans will have more plastic than fish, if we continue our plastic usage and unhealthy disposal methods. We should understand that these invisible micro-plastics eventually reach our tap-water, bringing a bigger health risk upon us! Unfortunately due to the size (sometimes less than 5mm), they cannot be filtered through water treatment.
Exactly like the microfibres from synthetic clothing! Let's not forget, synthetic plastic based micro-fibres like acrylic, nylon and polyester, released in 100,000s, every time we wash a synthetic fabric. The count reduces with the number of washes but what is important is not the figure of the plastic fibres but the fact that they are best avoided. These microfibres not only bypass the water treatment but become fodder for the ocean animals.
Now, how to tackle this? Simple. Refuse synthetic clothing. It is ideal to not use synthetic fabrics as even recycling them is not useful. Clothing made from natural fibres like cotton, hemp or wool is easily available and a far better choice, I would say.
While changing our buying habits can be difficult (but not impossible), we can, however, adopt a new washing ritual. Use a suitable washing bag for synthetic fibres? That easy?

Guppyfriend is an excellent example of how good intent combined with innovation and effort can help mankind to reduce plastic pollution. It is a product that traps the microfibres and controls micro waste while washing your clothes. It is a ‘Scientifically approved solution against microplastic pollution from washing.’ (as on their website.) Not only does it control fibre shedding, it protects your clothes and increases its longevity. The tiny trapped fibres are clearly visible in the washing bag. They can be collected after wash and disposed properly in trash. They are doing a great job at raising micro-plastic awareness and supporting and initiating ideas to replace or reduce the same! Give it a read here.
That was just a little something on micro-plastics and a product worth a mention!
Hope it helps you identify and change your habits, to live a better lifestyle. Live #plasticfree!
